Summer of Arts in Downtown Albany
The summertime is the perfect time to be living in downtown Albany. With a condo home at 17 Chapel, you’re walking distance from year-round arts & entertainment establishments such as the Palace Theatre, Capital Rep, and The Egg, but in the summer, music, art, and more take to the streets!
Some samplings of this summer’s exhibitions, concerts and festivals…
Scultpture in the Streets
Works from the late kinetic sculptor George Rickey (1907-2002) are decorating downtown Albany’s sidewalks and parks through March 2012. Sponsored by the Downtown Albany Business Improvement District (BID), this public art exhibition features pieces as large as 14 feet high and 22 feet wide that come to life with the slightest breeze.
Jazz Fest
The 1st Annual Downtown Albany Jazz Fest Competition will coincide with the 10th Annual Riverfront Jazz Festival this year, on Friday, September 9. From 6-10pm, selected regional and local bands will play at selected downtown establishments, all competing for the prize of playing the opening set on stage at noon the following day at the Riverfront Jazz Festival.
To date, participating venues include Jillian’s, R Bar, Franklin’s Tower, Bayou Café, McGeary’s, Taste, Pearl Street Pub, 74 State, Figure 10, and Blue 82. Spectators will vote for their favorite performance throughout the evening and the winner will be announced by midnight on the Downtown Albanay BID’s website.
September in the City Art Fair
Each week, art will be displayed in Tricentennial Park at Broadway and Columbia, while local musicians play two one-hour sets between 11:30 am and 2 pm. This annual event has been spicing up lunchtime for the last several years.
Music Schedule:
September 7: Ben Karis-Nix
September 14: Olivia Quillio
September 21: Holly & Evan
September 28: Annie & the Hedonists
LarkFEST
This free one-day street fair was voted in the top 3 of the “Best Arts Event” in the Capital Region in both 2009 and 2010. This year the festival celebrates its 30 anniversary with live music, more than a hundred unique vendors, and great food.
Alive At Five – Albany Summer Concert Series
This free outdoor concert series at the Corning Preserve, Albany Riverfront Park, brings great music downtown each Thursday at 5 p.m. The lineup runs from June through early August, meaning that it’s over for the 2011 season.
